Smart Heating

How Much Does Smart Heating Cost in the UK?

Transparent, realistic pricing for multi-zone smart heating systems - from single-zone starter projects to full whole-home automation.

If you're weighing up smart heating cost against the benefits, you're not alone — it's the question we're asked more than any other. The honest answer is: it depends. But "it depends" isn't much use when you're trying to budget, so below we've set out realistic, real-world pricing based on our own installed projects, so you know roughly what to expect before you ever pick up the phone.

How Much Does Smart Heating Cost in the UK?

Smart heating price in the UK varies according to four main things: the size of your property, the number of heating zones you want, the type of heating system you already have (or are installing), and which control platform you choose. A two-bedroom flat with a single combi boiler is a very different project to a five-bedroom self-build with underfloor heating and an air source heat pump, and the pricing reflects that.

As a starting point, most of our clients spend somewhere between £2,500 and £15,000+ on smart heating, with the majority of whole-home retrofit projects landing in the £5,000–£9,000 range. Below, we've broken this down by system size so you can see where your own project is likely to sit - but we'd always encourage treating these as a starting point for a conversation, not a final number.

We publish this kind of pricing openly because we think it's fairer to potential clients. Too many companies in this industry keep pricing vague until a sales visit, which makes it hard to know whether smart heating is even within reach for your project. We'd rather you walked into a consultation already knowing roughly what to expect, so the conversation can focus on your home and your priorities rather than starting from zero.

Pricing by System Size

These figures are indicative starting points for Loxone-based smart heating control, installed by Home Automate. Every quote is confirmed following a free survey, as wall construction, existing pipework, and access all affect the final price.Every home is different, and so is every lighting design. We work with a wide range of smart LED lighting products to create a layered scheme that combines task lighting, ambient lighting, and feature lighting — each fully controllable through your automation system.

System SizeTypical ZonesIndicative Price
Small2–4 zones, single heating source (e.g. flat or small terrace with combi boiler)From £2,500
Medium5–10 zones, mixed heating (radiators + partial underfloor heating)From £5,500
Large10+ zones, multiple heating sources, full whole-home integrationFrom £9,500

It's worth noting these ranges assume the property already has a working heat source in place — a boiler, heat pump, or existing underfloor heating manifold — and that we're adding smart control on top. If your project also involves installing a new heat pump, replacing pipework, or fitting underfloor heating from scratch, those costs sit separately from the heating automation figures above, and we'll always be clear about which is which in your quote.

These are indicative "from" prices for heating control alone. If you're planning a wider whole-home system covering lighting, security, and entertainment too, see our full Home Automation Cost Guide for combined pricing.

Cost Factors

Every smart lighting project we design is bespoke, but most fall into one of three broad tiers of complexity. Use these as a starting guide for budgeting, then speak to us for a figure specific to your home.

Number of Zones

Every additional zone requires its own sensor and actuator, so more granular room-by-room control naturally increases the heating automation budget.

Wired vs Wireless

Wired installation during a new build or major renovation is typically more cost-effective per zone than retrofitting wireless Loxone Air devices into a finished home.

Heating System Type

Underfloor heating manifolds, multiple heat sources, and hot water cylinder integration all add hardware and configuration time compared with a simple radiator-only system.

Control Platform

Loxone typically offers the most cost-effective route to whole-home heating control; KNX can suit larger or more complex commercial-style projects, usually at a higher heating control cost.

Sensors & Actuators

The number and type of temperature sensors, valve actuators, and manifold controllers required is driven by your zoning plan and property layout.

Wider Integration

Combining heating with lighting, blinds, or security under one system is more cost-effective than installing each in isolation, since they share the same Miniserver and app.

If several of these factors apply to your project - say, a large property with underfloor heating, a heat pump, and 10+ zones - costs will naturally sit towards the upper end of the ranges above. Equally, a smaller retrofit with wireless devices and a single heat source will typically land towards the lower end. This is exactly why we avoid quoting a single flat "smart heating system price" across the board; it simply wouldn't be accurate for most properties.

Energy Savings & Payback

Smart heating isn't simply a comfort upgrade - it's an investment that pays for itself over time. Smart heating energy savings come from three main sources: eliminating heat waste in unoccupied rooms through genuine room-by-room control, avoiding the inefficient on/off cycling that basic thermostats cause, and using scheduling, holiday modes, and geofencing to stop heating an empty house.

On projects we've completed with mixed radiator and underfloor heating zoning, clients typically report noticeably lower heating bills within the first winter, particularly where the previous setup was a single thermostat controlling the whole property. While every home is different, and factors like insulation and occupancy patterns affect the numbers, most clients see their smart heating roi play out over a small number of years rather than decades - especially when heat pump integration is involved, where correct zoning has an even larger impact on running costs.

It's also worth thinking about payback in terms of comfort as well as pounds. Rooms that are actually at the temperature you want, when you want them, without manually adjusting individual radiator valves or waiting for a slow-to-heat floor to catch up, is a benefit that's harder to put a number on - but it's consistently one of the things clients tell us they value most once the system is in day-to-day use.

Get a Personalised Quote

The only way to get an accurate smart heating quote is through a proper survey - every property, and every family's routine, is different. Book a free smart heating consultation and one of our engineers will visit your home, walk through your heating needs room by room, and provide a clear, itemised quote with no obligation.

There's no pressure and no sales tactics - just an honest conversation about what's achievable for your property and budget, and a written quote you can take time to consider. If smart heating turns out not to be the right fit for your circumstances right now, we'll tell you that too.
